Why do people today, more than ever before, pay so much attention to their origins, seeing them as a source of explanation for themselves and others? The views of French sociologist Gérald Bronner and Italian novelist Veronica Raimo can help us to think about this determinism or tyranny of origins.

Interview with Philippe Vilain, author of Maradona, Paris, Les Pérégrines, 2022. < Diego Maradona is the epitome of a novelistic hero: from a shantytown, he rises to the top, is adulated and rubs shoulders with heads of state, before being prosecuted and dying in solitude at the age of sixty. Philippe Vilain sets out to argue in defense of Maradona, whose aura has been built on the paradoxical image of a talented but unethical footballer. The Argentinian player seems to be a role model only for the international working class (witness the quasi-religious cult that is still devoted to him, particularly in Naples and Argentina): Maradona, son of the people, is the hero of a revolutionary left. By (un)writing his most resounding exploits, Philippe Vilain tells us the story of Maradona's gesture, a veritable political aesthetic.

Palazzo Farnese.
