Event presented in the framework of the Night of Ideas in Canada.
The Embassy of France in Canada and the National Gallery of Canada, in partnership with the Alliance Française d'Ottawa and in collaboration with the Michaëlle Jean Foundation, will propose a series of conversations and artistic performances on the theme of rebuilding together through the arts and culture. This will be an opportunity to exchange perspectives on the changes in this sector, at a time when new voices are being heard, in the direction of greater diversity and inclusion. How can this shift be explained? What is the place of cultural institutions in this context? What are the resistances to this opening? How can we build a sustainable future for art that benefits society as a whole?
The discussion will feature the participation of various art actors, curators and artists from a wide range of disciplines and backgrounds. It will be introduced by Kareen Rispal, Ambassador of France, and Sasha Suda, Director General of the National Gallery of Canada, and co-hosted by Michaëlle Jean, 27th Governor General of Canada, co-founder and co-chair of the Michaëlle Jean Foundation. The evening will feature Greg Hill, Senior Curator of Aboriginal Art at the National Gallery, in discussion with Paz Núñez-Regueiro, Curator at the Musée du Quai Branly and head of the CROYAN project, and Jonathan Lainey, Curator at the McCord Museum. Also participating will be Mani Soleymanlou, Artistic Director of the National Arts Centre French Theatre, Moridja Kitenge Banza, multi-disciplinary artist, Odile Joannette, Director of the Aboriginal Arts Grants Program at the Canada Council for the Arts, and Dawn Iehstoseranón:nha, (She Keeps The Feathers) Setford (Mary Francis), founder of the Indigenous Arts Collective of Canada.
The evening's artistic programme will be kicked off by DJ Memetic, aka Kwende Kefentse, who will activate Rashid Johnson's Capsule installation located in the main entrance of the museum. It will include a performance by spoken word artist El Jones and Inuit throat singing by Kendra Tagoona and Annie Aningmiuq.
