At the beginning of the 20th century the world experienced cataclysmic changes in socio-political terms, with the Great War, and revolutionary developments in scientific thought, with the emergence of post-Newtonian physics. Taken together, these changes forced thinkers from across the globe to rethink what it means to be human, especially in terms of their relationship with each other and the non-human environment around them. Muhammad Iqbal and Henri Bergson are two such thinkers who pursued this task-both independently and in conversation with each other. In this seminar Prof. Souleymane Bachir Diagne will lead a discussion on the affinity in the ideas of Iqbal and Bergson. In addition to looking at their historical and personal interaction, the discussion will focus on the relevance of Iqbal and Bergson to a most challenging socio-cultural trend, the rise of political populism and polarization within and between countries, and a most challenging scientific-cultural challenge, the global environmental crisis.
