Night walk in Sarajevo, the little Jerusalem of the Balkans
Founded by the Ottomans in 1461, Sarajevo is a unique city in the world. A city of history, a city of culture, a multi-ethnic city, a city of four religions: Muslim, Orthodox, Catholic and Jewish.
Historian of architecture, Mr Boris TRAPARA will discover more than 550 years of evolution of the architecture of the city of Sarajevo. He will take you through four historical periods: the Middle Ages, the Ottoman period, the Austro-Hungarian period and, finally, the period marked by modern architecture.
You will discover the most important monuments of these different periods:
- Vijecnica - Town Hall
This building, built by Alexander Wittek, and completed by Ćiril Iveković (1864-1933), is characteristic of the Moorish Revival style. - Gazi Husrev-bey Mosque, built in 1530, the work of the great Turkish architect Sinan.
- Ashkenazi synagogue
Built in 1902 in a neo-Moorish style. It is the only synagogue in Sarajevo that is still active. - Orthodox Cathedral of the Nativity of the Holy Mother of God
Built from 1863 to 1868 by the architect Andreja Damjanov. - Catholic Cathedral of the Heart of Jesus
Built between 1883 and 1889 by the architect Josip Vancaš, the cathedral is in neo-gothic style.
