The Institut français d'Égypte will participate, in partnership with the CEDEJ, in the 6th edition of the annual meeting of the Night of Ideas organized by the Institut français which will be held on January 28, 2021 around the theme "Close".

At a time when the global health crisis is limiting the international mobility of people and the situation in Egypt is preventing people from gathering together, the Institut français d'Égypte is offering an entirely digital edition by programming several filmed speeches by intellectuals and creators who will address this theme from the angles of the city, culture and creation.

The French Institute of Egypt, in partnership with the Cedej, will participate in this event in two stages.

On January 28th, he will propose on the show Live 24h de nuit et d'idées:

  • A major interview with the poet Iman Mersal by the journalist Lina Attalah, "Near and Far", in which she discusses the issues of exile and crossing, distance and intimacy, accent and writing.
  • A dialogue between two Middle Eastern playwrights: "Theatre in spite of everything! ». Dialogue between Ahmed El Attar (Egypt) and Ossama Halal (Syria). Moderator: Omar Abi Azar (Lebanon). In partnership with the French Institute of Lebanon.
  • Two urban walks, in the streets of Esna in Upper Egypt with urban planner Kareem Ibrahim and in Cairo on the Nile with sociologist Caroline Barbary

From February 1st, the Institut français d'Égypte will create a full week of programming on this theme by rebroadcasting these first videos and offering 3 new interviews:

  • "Describe", with the novelist Maylis de Kerangal on the ethics of literary description.
  • "Translate", with the theorist Tiphaine Samoyault on translation and intercultural dialogue.
  • "Density", with sociologist Agnès Deboulet on urban density

The worldwide programme 24 de Nuit et d'idées will be broadcast live on 28 January from 11:00 a.m., Cairo time, on the Facebook page of the Institut français d'Égypte and all its programming will be available on its Youtube channel.
