The health crisis has turned our modern societies upside down: stretching distances, limiting gatherings, confinement for some countries... In these circumstances, the Night of Ideas 2021 will revolve around the theme "Close", with the aim of getting together and highlighting the new solidarities that this crisis calls for.

The current situation has indeed led to a profound questioning of the values of our societies, to the point where the notion of "care" has emerged at the heart of the debates. According to Joan Tronto, "[care] is a kind of activity that includes everything we do to maintain, preserve and repair our world so that we can live in it as well as possible. This world includes our bodies, who we are as individuals, our environment, everything we seek to weave together into a tight and complex web whose purpose is to sustain life.

The crisis has brought invisible, devalued, often female jobs back to the forefront of the scene, suddenly appearing to be fundamental. The care of children, the sick, the elderly and people in difficulty is unevenly distributed around the world, both in France and South Korea. This task traditionally falls to women, and even more specifically to mothers who provide the link between generations. In these ultra-competitive modern societies, where the future is entirely "capitalized" on the child, the role of women, once they are mothers, quickly becomes that of caregivers focused on the well-being of the family unit.

Based on Sandra Laugier's postulates, our three speakers will debate together on these questions of "care" and "caring", to give voice to those responsible for care.
