For one night in the middle of the day, artists, actors and storytellers will meet with the public in the space of the Jeune Création gallery, which houses the exhibition " - Mais le monde est une mangrovité " (But the world is a mangrove). As in the past around a fire, it will be around the works that the oral forms of transmission of storytelling and narrative will come to life, to unleash their full political and philosophical power.

Program

Artist Wanjiru Kamuyu will open the night in broad daylight with a performance reading of the tale "Crab and Aparahiwa". Then, Olivier Marboeuf's voice will read, like an echo in the room, an unpublished tale. These stories will be followed by an oral discussion between Chris Cyrille and Olivier Marboeuf on the function of the tale as a political instrument. The exchanges between the two critics will be followed by a debate open to the public.

Speakers

  • Chris Cyrille - exhibition curator, critic and independent curator
  • Wanjiru Kamuyu - choreographer, performance artist
  • Olivier Marboeuf - author, critic, performer and independent curator

Discover excerpts from the story "The Crab and the Aparahiwa".

"The Crab and the Aparahiwa" is a tale proposed by art critic and exhibition storyteller Chris Cyrille. The five artists exhibited at the Jeune Création gallery (from 10 January to 26 February 2021) have produced a work that resonates (poetically) with this tale. The tale itself was imagined from the works.

The exhibition "But the world is a mangrove" is made up of all the stories, works and encounters between these two art forms. We invite you to discover the works of the artists in the Jeune Création gallery and to follow the publication on this page.

Every week, from the opening of the exhibition (10 January) until the Night of Ideas (28 January), an extract of the tale is published here on Soundcloud. You will be able to listen to the full story on January 28th during the Night of Ideas.

The tale we will tell tries to imagine, to guess other futures.

It tells the story of the Crab and the Aparahiwa. Two entangled subjects. The Crab tries to spit a path, the Aparahiwa collects the mangrove.

The storyteller here will be a voice from another time. She'll announce what has already happened to us later on.

The tale is divided here into four parts (although there are more) and an interlude:

The tale begins with the announcement of a disaster that has already taken place.

It continues with a dialogue between the Crab and the Aparahiwa.

Sanbras will look in the mangrove for the lungs he doesn't have anymore.

Interlude: the end of the story of Sanbras.

And then, the outcome of the announced disaster.
